Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 7th Century Welsh king Arthur is probably our best bet. I mean, he united the Kings of England, conquered Ireland & Gaul, and smacked some giants around. That’s good enough for me.
I’ve mentioned doing some Arthur work of my own, and if I did, it would be set in the 7th century, because of Geoffrey.
Though I’d throw in elements from Malory’s 15th century Arthur, because that’s where most of our King Arthur legends come from.
